Information about the elastic stiffnesses of such materials can often be obtained quickly and accurately using a measurement method based on the vibration modes and natural frequencies of rectangular panels. The method is outlined and illustrated, and some case studies discussed in which the method is applied to fibre-reinforced composite materials and to the selection of wood for musical instruments.
